Choose your game – a look at the most popular types of online poker

As online casino gaming has grown in popularity over the past 10 years or so, new games have appeared to try and tempt us in to staking our hard-earned money. Yet the classic games remain the bread and butter of both land-based and online casinos, and poker is, of course, one of those staples.

There are few games, however, that has as many variants in themselves – there are more than 100 different types of poker out there, and developers are coming up with yet more ideas every week. Here, we take a look at five of the most common.

Texas Hold ‘em

It is the most popular form of poker on the planet, thanks in part to being the game of choice for the World Series of Poker Main Event. Part of the attraction to Texas Hold ‘em is the simplicity of the rules – although as the masters are quick to remind us, poker might take five minutes to learn, but it can take a lifetime to master. Texas Hold ‘em is also common at online sites like Schmitts Casino, and appears alongside other casino classics such as blackjack, roulette and slots.

Five card draw

If you are playing poker for fun as opposed to big money, five card draw is likely to be the game you will choose. Players take it in turns to draw as many cards as they wish from the top of the pile, discarding an equal number, and there are betting rounds before and after each draw. After a set number of draws, the best hand wins, it’s that simple.

Seven card stud

Prior to the technological revolution and the surge in popularity for Texas Hold’ em, seven card stud was the most commonly played variant among serious poker players. It is a game that you can find in online casinos, but you might have to look around. Players start the game dealt three cards each, two face down and one face up. The remaining cards are dealt, with a round of betting each time – the fourth fifth and sixth cards are dealt face up, and the final card face down.

Omaha

Hugely popular in the online poker rooms, Omaha is essentially the same as Texas Hold ‘em as far as gameplay is concerned, the main difference being just four cards instead of five. Players are typically not allowed to bet more than is already in the pot, so this is a popular one among new players who do not want to get in too deep.

Horse

This is a game that has been born in the online age, and it cycles through different types of poker, including those listed above, with each round. It makes for interesting gameplay, and there is never a dull moment, but you do need to keep your wits about you. Horse is typically played to a set limit as opposed to a table limit or pot limit – in other words, the stake is predetermined.
